Characters currently in-game: That would be pretty impressive if I could list something here since it hasn't opened yet.
CHARACTER
Character Name: Thom Rainier (/"Gordon Blackwall")
Character Age: 47 (age not stated in canon but he seems to be older and had some gray in his hair in the original concept art so idk????)
Canon: Dragon Age
Canon Point: A month or two after the end of Inquisition (before Trespasser DLC)
History: A wild Wiki Entry appears!
Because Inquisition is a game where the story changes depending on choices made and Thom is post-main game, I'll be working with the following for choices that directly affect him
- The Wardens were not exiled
- Empress Celene was not assassinated
- Thom was sprung from prison via diplomacy/connections
- He was promised to the Wardens after the defeat of Corypheus
- Unromanced but good friends with the Inquisitor.
Personality: Thom Rainier's title among the Inquisition during the PR releases for the game was "The Resolve", an extremely fitting term for the man. At first glance he is the traditional paladin character type, someone dedicated entirely to a cause, who strives for it with everything they are. For better or for worse, once Rainier has committed to a path it takes quite a lot to drive him from it. This is true no matter how terrible the task may be, or how little reward comes from it.
He has since sort of come to terms with the sins of his past - sort of because there's no real coming to terms with what he did and truthfully he believes he should still be executed for what he did. Only by the grace and will of the Inquisitor was he moved to a new cause, but he has never stopped metaphorically carrying the bodies of those he's responsible for with him. Thom feels if he ever lets that go, he'll become the terrible person he once was, that this is the only way he can even begin to atone for his actions. He has been promised to the Wardens though, and as such he intends to devote everything he's got to that cause, even though he won't abandon his old one in the process.
Because of such weights on his past, Thom is reluctant to get to know people. Any people. All people. Interacting with them on a mentor-student basis is fine, or soldiers on a battlefield, but when it comes to questions about himself he pretty much clams up entirely, giving short, brisque answers that offer no real room for further question. While his past has since come out, he's still reluctant to open up, certain that no one would ever want to befriend or know him if they really knew him, so he may as well save them the trouble of the hurt later and keep it from ever happening.
Among those who have already wormed their way into his heart (through sheer stubborn friendliness, most likely) he becomes almost a completely different person than the taciturn soldier - Thom has a fairly juvenile sense of humor, and is terribly good at joking with a completely straight face (the beard helps). Under everything is a man who used to laugh often and still loves to do so, even if he doesn't feel he deserves that happiness anymore.
Where he is now in canon, Thom is still unsure of how to be Thom Rainier again, he was 'Warden Blackwall' for so long. He's trying to come clean and stop lying though, even if lying is so much easier. Just because he knows he'll slip back into it again, if only through omission, doesn't mean he'll give himself an early pass on it.
Inventory: Thom had actually just packed and set out from Skyhold to join the Wardens proper, so he's got a travel pack on him with the essentials of a few weeks of travel, including some dry rations, a sleeping pack, a few pieces of flint and tinder for starting a fire, soap (which he DOES know how to use in spite of what Dorian and Vivienne claim), and several days of travel dust/dirt.
Unrelated to that, Thom is fully armored as well as armed with a sword and shield.
Abilities: Thom Rainier is a sword and shield fighter with the Champion specialty. In Dragon Age terms that means he's focused on attack as well as defense as a base with a heavy focus on defense with the loss of speed/movement. He won't win any awards for fancy footwork on the battlefield, but you can bet your boots he'll be the last man standing. He can take a hit and deal it back again more than anyone else. Although he was not Orlesian by birth let alone from noble blood, Thom Rainier spent many years in the Orlesian army and gained quite a bit of rank in his time there. He has a lifetime of history as a soldier which gives him a mind for not just fighting but tactics, leading and training troops.
In non-combat related abilities, he has a good amount of understanding survival in the wilderness, how to find food, build a shelter, catch game and prepare it properly, build a fire under damn near any condition, etc. Were it not for a lot of his issues the man could lead a boyscout troop in his sleep, basically. He also has a perchance for carpentry. It's a hobby. Everyone needs one.
Flaws: Aha. Ahahaha. Ahahahaha. Literally responsible for the death of an innocent family including children, lied about it, ran for it and let his men who he lead into that situation take the fall for it which resulted in several of them being executed and many more having to make a run for it and turn to a life of crime. THEN upon meeting the Gray Warden Gordon Blackwall, when the man saw something in him and attempted to enlist him and ended up dead when they were beset upon by darkspawn, took said Gray Warden's identity rather than actually going to Weisshaupt or any other Gray Warden outpost and continue on the path Blackwall wanted him to. Lied about his identity for damn near half a decade like this. Basically he's a liar and a murderer and he's absolutely certain he should have been executed for this and he's still not sure why he was spared and is trying to pay for his crimes every day of his unworthy life this is fine we're fine everything is fine.
